Chrony je implementace Network Time Protocol (NTP). Dokáže synchronizovat systémové hodiny s NTP servery, referenčními hodinami (např. GPS přijímač) a ručním zadáním pomocí náramkových hodinek a klávesnice. Může také fungovat jako NTPv4 (RFC 5905) server a peer a poskytovat časovou službu ostatním počítačům v síti. Chrony se skládá ze dvou programů: chronyd a chronyc. Chronyd je démon, který běží na pozadí systému. Získává měření odchylky systémových hodin vůči časovým serverům na jiných systémech přes síť a podle toho upravuje systémový čas. U izolovaných systémů může uživatel periodicky zadat správný čas ručně (pomocí chronyc). V obou případech chronyd určuje rychlost, kterou počítač čas získává nebo ztrácí, a tuto odchylku kompenzuje. Chronyd může fungovat jako klient nebo server. Chronyc poskytuje uživatelské rozhraní k chronyd pro sledování jeho výkonu a konfiguraci různých nastavení. Může tak činit při spuštění na stejném počítači jako instance chronyd, kterou ovládá, nebo na jiném počítači.
