Die libevent-API bietet einen Mechanismus, um eine Callback-Funktion auszuführen, wenn ein bestimmtes Ereignis auf einem Dateideskriptor eintritt oder nachdem ein Timeout erreicht wurde. Darüber hinaus unterstützt libevent auch Callbacks aufgrund von Signalen oder regulären Timeouts. Derzeit unterstützt libevent /dev/poll, kqueue(2), Event Ports, POSIX select(2), Windows select(), poll(2) und epoll(4). Libevent stellt zusätzlich ein anspruchsvolles Framework für gepuffertes Netzwerk-IO bereit, mit Unterstützung für Sockets, Filter, Ratenbegrenzung, SSL, Zero-Copy-Dateiübertragung und IOCP. Libevent enthält Unterstützung für mehrere nützliche Protokolle, darunter DNS, HTTP und ein minimales RPC-Framework. Dieses Paket enthält die gemeinsam genutzten Bibliotheken für libevent.
