libfallocate fornisce un'interfaccia affinché le applicazioni informino i filesystem sulla dimensione dei file da scrivere, così che il filesystem possa prendere migliori decisioni di allocazione ed evitare la frammentazione. libfallocate fornisce un wrapper per la syscall fallocate() nel caso la vostra glibc (<2.10) non la abbia ancora. Fornisce anche linux_fallocate() che tenterà l'ioctl di prenotazione dello spazio fornito da xfs e ocfs2 nel caso fallocate() non abbia avuto successo. Ha un'interfaccia aggiuntiva più ricca, fallocate_with_fallback(), che consente di istruirla a ricorrere alla preallocazione azzerando (come posix_fallocate()) o ad estendere la dimensione del file con una scrittura sparse (come avrebbe fatto un fallocate() riuscito con mode==0).
