De meegeleverde hulpmiddelen delen dezelfde code die wordt gebruikt in de ACPI- implementatie van de kernel. De code van het acpica-project is precies dezelfde als de ACPI-parser- en interpretercode van de kernel en de code wordt regelmatig vanuit het acpica-project naar de kernel gesynchroniseerd. Bijv. als u bugs in de ACPI-implementatie van de kernel vindt, kan het gemakkelijker zijn om ze in userspace te debuggen indien mogelijk. Als de bug deel uitmaakt van de acpica-code, moet deze bij het acpica-project worden ingediend om in de mainline-kernelbronnen te worden opgenomen. iasl compileert ASL (ACPI Source Language) naar AML (ACPI Machine Language). Deze AML is geschikt voor opname als DSDT in systeem- firmware. Het kan ook AML disassembleren voor debugdoeleinden.
