O VirtualGL é uma biblioteca que permite que a maioria das aplicações OpenGL Linux seja exibida remotamente num thin client sem a necessidade de alterar as aplicações de qualquer forma. O VGL insere-se numa aplicação em tempo de execução e intercepta um punhado de chamadas GLX, que redireciona para o ecrã do servidor (que presumivelmente tem um acelerador 3D ligado.) Isto faz com que toda a renderização 3D ocorra no ecrã do servidor. À medida que cada fotograma é renderizado pelo servidor, o VirtualGL lê de volta os píxeis do framebuffer do servidor e envia-os ao cliente para recomposição na janela X apropriada. O VirtualGL pode ser usado para dar capacidades 3D aceleradas por hardware a VNC ou outros ambientes de visualização remota que carecem de suporte GLX. Num ambiente LAN, também pode ser usado com o seu sistema integrado de entrega de vídeo motion-JPEG para exibir remotamente aplicações 3D em ecrã inteiro a 20+ fotogramas/segundo. O VirtualGL baseia-se em ideias apresentadas em vários artigos académicos sobre este tópico, incluindo "A Generic Solution for Hardware-Accelerated Remote Visualization" (Stegmaier, Magallon, Ertl 2002) e "A Framework for Interactive Hardware Accelerated Remote 3D-Visualization" (Engel, Sommer, Ertl 2000.)
