Les cancel locks sont utilisés par les auteurs d'articles Usenet pour authentifier leur autorat d'un article. Ils peuvent ensuite être utilisés par les serveurs pour empêcher les abus de cancel et de supersede. L'utilisation de cette fonctionnalité reste à la décision du newsmaster. Ce paquet contient un utilitaire simple encapsulant la bibliothèque canlock, qui peut être utilisé à la fois pour la génération et la vérification des cancel locks, ainsi qu'un analyseur d'en-têtes de message et un analyseur de champs d'en-tête.
