Chrony es una implementación del Network Time Protocol (NTP). Puede sincronizar el reloj del sistema con servidores NTP, relojes de referencia (p. ej. un receptor GPS) y entrada manual mediante reloj de pulsera y teclado. También puede operar como servidor y par NTPv4 (RFC 5905) para proporcionar un servicio de tiempo a otros ordenadores en la red. Chrony consta de dos programas: chronyd y chronyc. Chronyd es un demonio que se ejecuta en segundo plano en el sistema. Obtiene mediciones del desfase del reloj del sistema respecto a servidores de tiempo en otros sistemas a través de la red y ajusta la hora del sistema en consecuencia. En sistemas aislados, el usuario puede introducir periódicamente la hora correcta a mano (usando chronyc). En cualquiera de los casos, chronyd determina la velocidad a la que el ordenador gana o pierde tiempo y lo compensa. Chronyd puede actuar como cliente o como servidor. Chronyc proporciona una interfaz de usuario a chronyd para supervisar su rendimiento y configurar varios ajustes. Puede hacerlo mientras se ejecuta en el mismo ordenador que la instancia de chronyd que controla o en un ordenador distinto.
