HDF4 (também conhecido como HDF) é uma biblioteca e um formato de ficheiro multiobjeto para armazenar e gerir dados entre máquinas. Existem duas versões das tecnologias HDF que são completamente diferentes: HDF4 e HDF5. HDF4 é o primeiro formato HDF. No seu nível mais baixo, HDF4 é um formato de ficheiro físico para armazenar dados científicos. No seu nível mais alto, HDF4 é uma coleção de utilitários e aplicações para manipular, visualizar e analisar dados em ficheiros HDF4. Entre estes níveis, HDF4 é uma biblioteca de software que fornece APIs de alto nível e uma interface de dados de baixo nível. Esta é a versão legada HDF4. Embora ainda seja mantida, novos utilizadores que não estejam limitados a usar HDF4 devem usar HDF5 em vez disso. Este pacote contém funções utilitárias para trabalhar com ficheiros HDF4.
