librelp es una biblioteca fácil de usar para el protocolo RELP. RELP a su vez proporciona registro fiable de eventos a través de la red (y por consiguiente RELP significa Reliable Event Logging Protocol). RELP fue iniciado por Rainer Gerhards después de que finalmente se hartara de la naturaleza con pérdidas del syslog tcp plano y quisiera una cura para todos estos problemas pendientes. RELP (y por tanto) librelp asegura que no se pierda ningún mensaje, ni siquiera cuando se rompen las conexiones y un peer deja de estar disponible. La versión actual de RELP tiene una ventana mínima de oportunidad para la duplicación de mensajes después de que una sesión se haya interrumpido por problemas de red. En este caso, algunos mensajes pueden duplicarse (un problema que también existe con el syslog tcp plano). Las versiones futuras de RELP abordarán esta deficiencia. Tenga en cuenta que RELP es un protocolo de registro de propósito general y extensible. Aunque fue diseñado para resolver la necesidad urgente de la comunicación rsyslog-a-rsyslog, RELP admite muchas más aplicaciones. Los verbos de comando extensibles ofrecen amplias oportunidades para extender el protocolo sin afectar a las aplicaciones existentes.
