BrlAPI ist ein Dienst, der vom brltty-Daemon bereitgestellt wird. Sein Zweck ist es, Programmierern zu ermöglichen, Anwendungen zu schreiben, die einen Braille-Terminal nutzen, um einem blinden Benutzer geeignete Informationen für seine spezifischen Bedürfnisse bereitzustellen. Während eine Anwendung mit dem Braille-Terminal kommuniziert, wird alles, was brltty an die Braille-Terminal-Konsole der Anwendung sendet, ignoriert, während jedes Datenstück vom Braille-Terminal an die Anwendung gesendet wird, und nicht an brltty.
