Ce projet est dérivé de l’implémentation de Sun de java.util.Formatter. Il est conçu pour permettre des vérifications à la compilation afin de déterminer si l’utilisation d’une chaîne de format sera erronée lors de l’exécution. Ce code est dérivé de l’implémentation OpenJDK, jdk1.7.0-b35. À ce titre, il est sous la même licence qu’OpenJDK, GPL v2 + l’exception Classpath. Ce projet est préliminaire et l’API est susceptible de changer. La bibliothèque produite en compilant ce projet est utilisée par le projet FindBugs. Pour éviter toute question de licence due à des licences incompatibles (FindBugs est sous licence LGPL), elle a été extraite en tant que projet distinct. Bien qu’il puisse y avoir une certaine confusion ou discussion au sujet des licences, le projet FindBugs n’interprète pas la licence LGPL de FindBugs comme plus stricte que GPL v2 + l’exception Classpath.
