About NixOS
NixOS is built on a radical premise: the entire operating system is described in configuration files, and the running machine is derived from that description. Using the Nix package manager, every package and system generation lives in an isolated store, so upgrades are atomic, several versions of anything can coexist, and any change can be undone by booting a previous generation from the menu. Rebuild the same configuration on another machine and you get the same system, which is why NixOS appears in development environments, reproducible research, and fleets managed as code. The package collection behind it is enormous, spanning a stable channel and a fast-moving unstable one. The cost is a learning curve: the Nix language and its ecosystem take real study, and conventional Linux habits do not always transfer.
