Aunque Unicode admite la gran mayoría de los casos de uso, existen ciertos nichos especializados que requieren caracteres y glifos aún no representados en el estándar. De ahí el Private Use Area (PUA) en los puntos de código E000-F8FF, que permite a terceros definir conjuntos de caracteres arbitrarios. Este paquete permite configurar varias macros para usar diversos conjuntos de caracteres PUA en LaTeX (AGL, CYFI, MUFI, SIL, TITUS, UCSUR, UNZ), a fin de habilitar la transcripción y visualización de documentos medievales y de otro tipo.
