GnuCOBOL es un compilador de COBOL que implementa una parte sustancial de los estándares COBOL 85, COBOL 2002 y COBOL 2014, así como muchas extensiones incluidas en otros compiladores de COBOL. GnuCOBOL traduce COBOL a C y compila el código traducido usando un compilador C nativo. cobc traduce COBOL a un ejecutable mediante fuentes C intermedias, proporcionando acceso completo a casi todas las bibliotecas C.
