Dies ist eine transportunabhängige Implementierung von RFC 3720 iSCSI. Sie ist in Benutzer- und Kernelteile unterteilt. Der Kernelanteil von Open-iSCSI implementiert den iSCSI-Datenpfad (das heißt iSCSI Read und iSCSI Write) und besteht aus zwei ladbaren Modulen: iscsi_if.ko und iscsi_tcp.ko, und wird inzwischen als Teil des Kernels geliefert. Der User-Space-Teil enthält die gesamte Steuerebene: Konfigurations- manager, iSCSI Discovery, Login- und Logout-Verarbeitung, verbindungsbezogene Fehlerverarbeitung, Nop-In- und Nop-Out-Behandlung.
