O Orthanc visa fornecer um servidor DICOM autónomo simples, mas poderoso. O Orthanc pode transformar qualquer computador com Windows ou Linux num repositório DICOM (por outras palavras, um sistema mini-PACS). A sua arquitetura é leve, o que significa que não é necessária uma administração complexa de bases de dados, nem a instalação de dependências de terceiros.
