Demone Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol (RFC 2661)

xl2tpd è un'implementazione del Layer 2 Tunnelling Protocol (RFC 2661). L2TP consente di tunnelizzare PPP su UDP. Alcuni ISP usano L2TP per tunnelizzare le sessioni utente dai server di accesso (banchi modem, DSLAM ADSL) verso server PPP di back-end. Un'altra applicazione importante sono le reti private virtuali in cui il protocollo IPsec viene usato per proteggere la connessione L2TP (L2TP/IPsec, RFC 3193). Il protocollo L2TP/IPsec è usato principalmente dai client Windows e Mac OS X. Su Linux, xl2tpd può essere usato in combinazione con implementazioni IPsec come Openswan. In questo RPM sono inclusi file di configurazione di esempio per tale impostazione. xl2tpd funziona aprendo un pseudo-tty per comunicare con pppd. Viene eseguito completamente in spazio utente ma supporta L2TP in modalità kernel. xl2tpd supporta il tracciamento dei riferimenti SA IPsec per consentire IP interne NATate sovrapposte da client diversi (ad es. tutti i client che si collegano dalla loro IP interna linksys 192.168.1.101), nonché più client dietro lo stesso router NAT. xl2tpd supporta le operazioni in modalità kernel pppol2tp su 2.6.23 o superiore, o tramite una patch in contrib per i kernel 2.4.x. Xl2tpd si basa sul L2TP 0.69 di Jeff McAdams <jeffm@iglou.com> È stato mantenuto di fatto da Jacco de Leeuw <jacco2@dds.nl> nel 2002 e nel 2003.
