A passively cooled appliance replaces a consumer router with something you can configure. There is no fan, so there is no moving part to fail and no noise in a hallway cupboard.

Running your own routing software gets you real firewall rules, VLANs, a VPN endpoint, and logs you can actually read. It also keeps getting security updates long after a consumer router would have stopped receiving them.

Four network ports is enough for a WAN link, a LAN, a management segment and one spare, which covers most homes and small offices without paying for ports nobody will use.
