RAID Calculator
Estimate raw and usable capacity for RAID 0, 1, 5, 6 and 10 with spare-drive and unit controls.
Files stay in this browser tab.
How to use it
Choose a RAID level, drive count, individual size and spare count. Inspect capacity before filesystem overhead.
Worked example
Four 4 TB drives in RAID 5 provide 12 TB before filesystem and implementation overhead.
What to check
Capacity assumes equal usable drive sizes. RAID is not a backup and this estimate does not predict performance or rebuild safety.
Build a system for this use case
NAS evaluation environment
Example OpenFactory build prompt
Build a useful nas evaluation environment on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS amd64, unless the target installer or embedded board requires its explicitly selected OS.
Use mdadm, a file-sharing service and simulated data drives. Include only the components this workload needs. Use synthetic sample data and placeholders for site-specific domains, authorized SSH public keys and external integration credentials. Create a non-root operator and keep administrative access private. Never put real credentials, patient records or customer data in the image.
Acceptance checks: create a test array, verify shared-file permissions, simulate one supported drive failure and restore a file from independent backup. Boot the actual artifact and repeat relevant health, persistence and access checks after reboot. Keep hardware-dependent checks pending until the specified equipment is attached.
Deliver the bootable image or reproducible deployment recipe, the software inventory and a test report that separates successful assembly from runtime verification. Ask for missing hardware, storage and access details before making irreversible deployment choices. Do not deploy into production or erase an existing disk without an explicit target.Your tool inputs and files are not included in the build prompt. Review the draft and press Send in OpenFactory.
